"Alternative energy" is a term used for some energy source that is an alternative to using fossil fuels. Generally, it indicates energies that are non-traditional and derived from sources that do not harm the environment or deplete the Earth's natural resources. Typical sources include wind and solar. Nuclear energy is usually excluded from this definition. Some sources may use "alternative energy" interchangeably with "renewable energy".
